By 1850 Dr. John Gorrie of Apalachicola had developed mechanical refrigeration. He was granted a United States patent for this invention on May 6, 1851. Dr. Gorrie developed mechanical refrigeration in an effort to cool the rooms of patients suffering from malaria. The importance of his invention was not recognized until many years after his death.
